Thursday Thoughts: Connection and Flow

Are you writing with your readers in mind? There are many aspects to strong scholarly writing, such as solid claims, using reputable sources, and clear, solid analysis to support your argument. However, readers may not be able to fully appreciate your argument if they don’t “see” the connection among your points.

Connection and flow across paragraphs and among points within paragraphs can help “glue” your overall argument together for readers, making it easier for readers to follow your argument.

The Writing Center has several sources on how to create strong connection and flow across paragraphs and among points, such as our blog series on “Strategies for Enhancing 'Flow' in Your Academic Writing” and our page on transitions. Of course, you might also grab a snack and beverage and check out our archived webinar on “Cohesion and Flow: Bringing Your Paper Together.”
